The St Benedict’s Scholarship Programmes makes a critical difference to deserving boys who could not otherwise fulfil their dreams of an education at St Benedict’s. The ability to offer competitive scholarships provides an investment in our boys' futures as they prepare to become leaders, not only in South Africa, but throughout the world.
Establishing a scholarship ensures that an education at St Benedict’s will be accessible to outstanding and deserving young boys for generations. It's also a very meaningful way to honour family and friends.
A Once-off Scholarship
A once-off scholarship can be established with an outright gift of R 300 000 or with staggered payments of R 60 000 over a period of five years. Such a contribution will secure both tuition and boarding for the suitable candidate. Unlike an endowed scholarship described below, an annual scholarship is not a permanent fund and is awarded only as long as contributions are received.
Endowed scholarships involve the donation of funds which are designed to be permanent and perpetual and can be created with gifts totalling a minimum amount of R500,000, contributed in full at the outset or with an initial commitment that is added to over time until the endowment level of R500,000 is attained.
The principal of the fund is invested to produce income, and an annual award is made to a deserving candidate. The principal remains untouched, so the endowment can last into perpetuity.
You can establish a scholarship in your own name or choose to name it for a friend, family member or a favourite staff member. St Benedict’s will draft the criteria according to your intentions of the scholarship and present it to you for your approval.
The awarding and administration of the endowed scholarship will be at the discretion of the School. In exchange for the donation, St Benedict’s undertakes:
- To issue a Section 18A tax certificate upon receipt of the said donation.
- To award the Scholarship annually to a deserving candidate.
- To issue the successful candidate with the attached Scholarship certificate.
- The successful candidate and his family will meet with the sponsor (and his/her representatives) in Grade 8 and in Grade 12.
- To provide the sponsor with regular progress reports on the candidate.
Enquires relating to the establishment of a scholarship should be directed to the school’s Bursar, Mrs Coleen Mowatt
